Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Paneer

Paneer is an excellent option if you’re looking for a tasty vegetarian protein that isn’t tofu, seitan, or tempeh. Here at Alings’ restaurant, we offer several incredible paneer dishes.

If you’re feeling intimidated because you’ve never tried paneer before, never fear. This is your full, complete guide to India’s most popular cheese.

What is paneer?

Paneer is often described as Indian cottage cheese, but it has very little in common with the cottage cheese you may know. It’s a soft, firm cheese that doesn’t melt.

When it’s served up in dishes, it’s usually cut into cubes. Sometimes, its’ fried. Either way, the texture of the cheese offers a satisfying bite.

Is paneer healthy?

Paneer offers many health benefits. It’s a high-protein food. It also contains plenty of tryptophan, which helps with insulin production, sleep, and even depression.

Paneer also has a high zinc content, which boosts immunity, and a high vitamin B 12 content for brain health.

Paneer does have a high fat content, however, which means it’s best enjoyed in moderation.

What does paneer taste like?

The taste is not terribly strong. It’s mild and it’s pleasing. Some describe the flavor as being a little close to ricotta.

Paneer is its own flavor, however, and it’s something you’ll have to experience for yourself to fully assess and appreciate.

How is paneer used?

Paneer is usually used in sauces and stir fries and served over rice.

If you want to try paneer at Alings, you’ve got several incredible options.

The first is Paneer 88, which is soaked in an in-house marinade before being tossed with onions, bell peppers, garlic, and cilantro. We garnish it with fresh lime and lemon wedges.

The second option is our Chili Pepper Paneer, which is paneer fried and tossed with bell peppers, onions, garlic, and green chilies. We serve it up with a delightful spicy seasoning.

For our V7 Chili Paneer, we stir fry batons of paneer with fresh onions, chilis, and bell peppers, then serve it up in a soy-based sauce.

We recommend trying them all!
